Take Mama To The Zoo

Make an impression in the Ice Cave at the Zoo's Arctic Ring of Life

This sounds like fun: MamapaZOOza at the Detroit Zoo, with music by the mom musicians of The Mydols, Swingset Mamas and The Barrettes in a family-friendly, pre-Mother’s Day concert.

The ladies will rock from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, May 1 at the Main Picnic Grove, and the music is free with zoo admission.

This is a great time to join the Detroit Zoological Society and enjoy repeat visits throughout the rest of the year for one low price.

I promoted zoo membership in a blog post last year.

Though I’d like to think that plug was partly responsible for the 12% increase in zoo members, I think the higher participation might have something to do with folks discovering the benefits of supporting the zoo:

– no limit on number of visits you can make each year
– residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties knock $10 off the membership fee
– free parking
– 10% off purchases at the Zoofari Market
– discounted admission at dozens of participating zoos and aquariums across the land, including Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, John Ball in Grand Rapids, Potter Park in Lansing, and the Children’s Zoo in Saginaw, and Great Lakes region zoos in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, and Toronto.

Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a pre-Mother’s Day excursion. Note to Mom: If you’re planning the outing, be sure to hit the deli and make it a carry-out lunch.

You may even find a wild Mother’s Day gift at the Zoofari Market (at 10% off for members!).

  1. We had a zoo membership when the kids were growing up and we loved it! During the school year we went a lot when the kids had 1/2 a day or a day off and during the summer we went almost once a week. It was fun and always something new to see. I am seriously thinking of getting a zoo membership for my husband and I now that the kids are grown.

    • Go for it! Especially with the Wild Summer Nights Wednesday evening concerts coming up in July and August!

  2. PS We also used the membership at the Toledo Zoo, which is a nice zoo, also.

  3. My daughter, Jen, and her family live southwest of Chicago and have a Family Pass at the Brookfield Zoo – that they love! They’re ‘zoo freaks’ and also really like the Toledo Zoo, Susan. What great family fun, hey?

    • I agree, Toledo Zoo is great. Been to Lincoln Park but not Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

  4. Just to let you know I bought the membership last night. 🙂

    • Great! See you at the Zoo 🙂
