It’s Time To Plan Your Michigan Vacation

Take an early morning walk on a Lake Michigan beach

It’s mid-May: Have you made your summer travel plans yet? They include a Pure Michigan vacation, of course. Here’s some inspiration to get you started, and info on a contest for added incentive.

Begin by checking out the Travel Michigan website to watch the award-winning Pure Michigan television ads, and order your free copy of Michigan Travel Ideas magazine.

Are you going to make it an active, outdoors getaway…a city sightseeing excursion…quiet time in the woods…a day at the beach? And will that sandy stretch be on an inland or a Great Lake? In the Upper or Lower Peninsula?

Then the fun begins: Where to stay?

Visit Old Mackinac Lighthouse, Mackinaw City

You can wade through the listings on dozens of visitors bureau websites, or ask about that cottage of a friend of a friend…

Or you can turn to Rentalbug Michigan Vacation Rentals, which lists 650 properties in dozens of locations across both peninsulas, from Alden to Wolverine.

I’ve not used the service but met the owner, Melissa Morrison of Lexington, at the recent tourism conference on Mackinac Island. She started the company in 2004 because she saw a need for a central resource for a variety of accommodations across the state, and has built Rentalbug from a sideline to full-time business.

At you can find a Bed & Breakfast, a cozy cabin for two, convenient condo or a rambling lakefront home for a family reunion of 30. Just plug in your preferences according to type of accommodation, region or city, number in your party—there’s also a pet friendly option. Listings are detailed and include photos, rates, area attractions, what’s included (DVD player? Check. Pots & Pans? Check.), as well as a link to the property’s website.

Paddle the AuSable River

Rentalbug is a resource, not a booking agency. You contact the property owner directly to arrange your stay.

Now through May 31 you can enter to win a $750 voucher towards your stay at any of the properties. Visit and click on the contest button. Remember: You can’t win if you don’t enter!

Be sure to check the Facebook page for last minute availability and deals.

Happy planning!

Escape to Les Cheneaux, Eastern Upper Peninsula

  1. The ‘girls’ in my family try to have a Girls’ Weekend every year – always at different seasons of the year and different places. This year we’re going to the west side of the state – Pentwater – which is very cool as I’ve not spent much time in that part of our beautiful Michigan. Any cool suggestions for things to do, places to see, people to meet?

    • Hi Cindy Lou:
Have not been there in years; coincidentally, I’ll be exploring that area soon. I’ll be checking out The Fox Barn Market & Winery in Shelby, the Country Dairy in New Era and doing the Mac Woods Dune Rides In Silver Lake. There are free Civic Band Concerts Thursday evening on the Pentwater village green.
I understand the English Muffin Bread at Morat’s Old Tiffany Bake Shop in Mears is a must.
When are you going? I’ll have more tips after my research trip!
