Donut Miss This

Lynne Van Brocklin takes a break beneath a fraction of the cookie jars that line the walls of the bakery

I thought it strange that The Sawmill Saloon menu would make a point of stating that the bun on which it perched its burger was from Van Brocklin’s Bakery. Until I ate the burger. Delish.

The buns are sold only to restaurants, but you can choose from more than 40 varieties of donuts baked fresh daily at Van Brocklin’s Bakery in Big Rapids.

I had to interrupt my trip to Paris (Michigan) when I saw the cheery red and white checked curtains in the window of the otherwise nondescript building on the busy highway.

“They’re all good,” said a regular customer when I wondered allowed which donut to choose.

Lynne Van Brocklin works the front end of the business while her husband Joe concocts the melt-in-your-mouth donuts. They’ve been working their donut magic for 20 years, and Van Brocklin’s is well worth the detour if you’re craving an apple fritter while on your way to Paris—or are anywhere near Big Rapids.
