Michigan’s U.S. Senator-For-Life Carl Levin was at a coffee klatch with Democrats back home in a Big Rapids cafe on Monday, August 16 when one of his constituents served him an apple pie that he had not ordered. Smack in the face.
It was an insensitive act: Levin said he prefers blueberry.
The woman, a 22-year old Michigan State University student from Coldwater named Ahlam M. Mohsen, does not work at Pepper’s Cafe. The downtown deli doesn’t even sell pie. Ahlam smuggled hers into the gathering and delivered it to the Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman while an accomplice identified as Max Kantar accused Levin of “Israel war crimes against the Palestinian people.”
One report claimed there was a third person involved who shot video of the incident, but as far as I can find no images of the encounter have surfaced. My guess is it’s because the apple pie footage wasn’t dramatic enough.
Anyone who’s seen the wild and wacky 1960’s TV icon Soupy Sales get hit with pie after pie can tell you that to have any impact the projectile must be piled high with cream.
Of course, Ahlam is too young to have seen the comedian’s original TV shows, but don’t these young comrades do their recon on YouTube? Lessons on pie throwing are just a click away.
(Click Soupy’s name above to see a YouTube tribute to the late Detroit TV star.)
I sincerely hope Ahlam has learned something from this experience, and the next time she wants to send the Senator a message she should wait until he meets with the folks over a cuppa Joe at Cunningham’s Family Restaurant in Mackinaw City.
They’ve got pies she can deliver with panache.
