On Tap: Founders Keepers

Handcrafted beer and sandwich at Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids

If you’re heading to Grand Rapids for ArtPrize or for any other reason, be sure to stop by Founders Brewing Company for a sample of success by the pint. It’s one of the reasons Michigan is earning its reputation as the Great Beer State. Housed in a nifty ’50’s former trucking building, the joint is jumping just about all the time for the beer crafted on site, the tasty menu, and the lively vibe.

Founders has at least a dozen year round, specialty, and seasonal beers on tap at a time

The taproom is a casual, wide open space with a curving bar on one wall and on the other, several doors that open to a covered loading dock/porch for seasonal outdoor seating.

When I stepped up to the kitchen window to order my sandwich I couldn’t decide—they all looked good—so I asked for the most popular and ended up with the Mug Clubber, a chicken club on sourdough. I added a side of broccoli salad and washed down my supper with Oatmeal Stout. Delish.

Founded in 1997 by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers, Founders beer is raking in medals and rave reviews from those in the know. The community-minded company supports Grand Rapids Whitewater, an effort to restore the rapids in the Grand  River, and sponsors a bike racing team, which makes it popular with cyclists who stop by on two wheels after their evening rides.

It’s also a venue for eight ArtPrize pieces, so it’s an essential stop for those interested in artistic pursuits, too. At least until October 10 when ArtPrize ends.

Then you’ll just have to go to Founders for the great food and beer.
