Bygone Basics: Preserving Our Heritage

Canning tomatoes is made easy with Bygone Basics

We do a lot of from scratch cooking and baking in our home, but canning is something I’d never tackled, and my pie crusts have always left a lot to be desired.

That changed on the day in June that I spent with Valerie Hanson, who founded her business Bygone Basics to share her knowledge of home arts with the kitchen-challenged among us.

Read about in the Sunday, December 5 Chicago Sun-Times.

Our little group canned tomatoes and baked apple pie, but each session can be tailored to your interests. You can learn canning of many other foods, making preserves, baking yeast and sweet breads and cookies, and more.

A gift certificate for a Bygone Basics session would make a fun and useful present!

  1. Amanda and I really enjoyed your visit. We speak fondly of you….and your vehicle. 🙂
At Bygone Basics, we are enjoying experiences we get to do this time of year much more often like Christmas pudding boiled in a tin can and of course, Christmas jam. Who needs scented candles when the real thing is going on?! 🙂
BTW: You have inspired me to start my own blog.

    • Yum, Christmas pudding and jam…mouthwatering.

Looking forward to your blog (in your spare time? 😉

  2. Wonderful “Basics” Valerie. Even to the old Cook Book!
