A Sputnik Moment For Great Lakers

A Sputnik Moment: Great Lakes States provide D.C. star power

This runs counter to the unity theme that ran through President Obama’s State Of The Union Speech, from the mingling of Democrats and Republicans in the seating arrangement to the President’s reminder that we are all Americans, “Move together or not at all,” kumbaya, etc.

But as Great Lakes Gazetteer I take great pride in this region and have to be a bit divisive for just a moment to point out that in our Nation’s Capital, Great Lakers Rule.

Great Lakers are rooted in the eight states that touch the five freshwater seas of Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The key players during and after the SOTUS are from the region that is visible from space. You could call this a Great Laker’s Sputnik Moment:

President Barack Obama, lists home as Chicago, Illinois

Vice President Joe Biden is from Scranton, Pennsylvania

Speaker of the House, U.S. Representative John Boehner, R- Ohio

GOP responder to the SOTUS: U.S. Representative Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin

Tea Party responder to the SOTUS: U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota

That’s a lot of D.C. star power from the Great Lakes Region. There must be something in the water.

Which reminds me: I didn’t hear any one of those Great Lakers mention one of the really big issues of our day, the Asian Carp crisis.
