Friday Trivia: Happy Birthday To…

He was born in Detroit on February 4, 1902, but grew up in Little Falls, Minnesota.

As a daring young man he did something plane amazing and gained instant, international celebrity.

In 1927 he was named Time magazine’s first Man of the Year

He inspired songs, a dance, and movies, and has—among other things—a school and a state park named for him.

His grave marker in Hawaii reads: (his name) Born Michigan 1902, Died Maui 1974.

It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s our Birthday Boy!

After his May 20-21, 1927 solo New York-to-Paris flight in his plane The Spirit of St Louis, Charles A Lindbergh went from an unknown aviator to wildly popular personality and a hero to kids. All sorts of commemorative items, including toys, were made in his honor.

Lindbergh commemoratives on display

A few of them are on display in the exhibit of vintage toys, “Batteries Not Included” at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing through March 6, 2011.

Admission to the museum is free, and well worth it. I’l have more about the permanent exhibits in a future post.

Now go have a piece of cake for Lucky Lindy.
