It “looks like a perfect weekend” in Michigan’s cross country ski country, according the Grayling Visitors Bureau.
Escape with your Valentine to the northern Lower Peninsula, one of the best XC Ski areas in the nation. You’ll have your choice of easy-to-difficult Nordic skiing on miles of trails at seven sites near Grayling and Roscommon.
Bob and Lynne Frye’s Cross Country Ski Headquarters of Roscommon has earned its national reputation for excellence by welcoming XC skiers since 1974 to the area’s hub of Nordic skiing, with over 12 miles of trails and one of the top XC ski stores in the U.S.
XC Ski HQ also rents name brand, state of the art skis as well as snowshoes and ski walking poles at one-hour, three-hour, full day and weekend rental packages. Kids and adults can take private lessons or join a one-hour Learn to Ski Free session at 4 p.m. Saturdays.
The Stone Turtle Day Lodge has a big, inviting fireplace and a kitchen that dishes up chili, soups, and sandwiches, and special weekend meals.
You’ll find Bob and Lynne on site offering tips and advice to skiers, or behind the counter waiting on customers. If you’re at all intimidated by the sport head to XC Ski HQ to get started; their enthusiasm is contagious.
In addition to XC Ski HQ you can ski Hanson Hills Recreation Area, North Higgins Lake State Park, Forbush Corner, Forest Dunes, the undeveloped Mason Tract on the AuSable River, and Hartwick Pines State Park.
Bonus at Hartwick Pine from 6-9 p.m. on Saturdays, February 12 and 26: Cross Country Ski by Lantern Light.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of lodging options in the Grayling area; I was lucky to enjoy the hospitality of Cheri and Mark Hunter and the cozy, nicely decorated Brook Room at Borchers Bed & Breakfast on the AuSable (Borchers is also a canoe livery in warm months).
Be tempted by the famous Borchers Egg Casserole that Cheri whips up for breakfast, and check out Borchers’ handy summary of the variety of cross country skiing in the area.
After a day on XC ski or snowshoe trails relax in deluxe digs with a Stay and Ski Package at Forest Dunes in Roscommon. Fully furnished homes at the award-winning golf course welcome winter guests at reasonable rates; ski rentals are available.
