What began as a casual display of artwork clipped to clotheslines strung among the trees of Bronson Park in beautiful downtown Kalamazoo celebrates a milestone this weekend.
The “Clothesline Fair” was launched in 1952 by two locals to help “find means by which the ordinary person…would become conscious of how things creative in surroundings can enhance the joy of living.”
Renamed the KIA (Kalamazoo Institute of Arts) Art Fair in 1969, the 60th annual event opens in the same location but booths and tents, not lengths of rope, will serve as the two-day showcase for the best work of 210 jewelry makers, sculptors, woodworkers, painters, photographers, potters and other artists.
The KIA Art Fair, the oldest in Michigan and second oldest in the nation, runs from Noon-7 p.m. Friday, June 3 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 4.
Other events are happening around the art fair in downtown Kalamazoo, including:
– Art Hop, a quarterly open studio event, 5-9 p.m. Friday, June 3
– Do-Dah Parade, silliness in the streets, 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4
– Dionysos Greekfest, 35th annual celebration with Greek food and music at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, June 2-4
– Art on the Mall, another 70 artists display and sell their work on the downtown pedestrian-friendly mall, June 3-4
A very special event takes place at this weekend at the Michigan News Agency in Kalamazoo from 5-9 p.m., Friday, June 3 to complement the KIA Art Fair:
See the art of David Eldred, an illustrator with Michigan roots whose work is featured in the local Asylum Lake Magazine, hear music by the local group Hired Hands Band, and sip wine from the local Tempo Vino Winery.
Notice a local theme here? Michigan News Agency has been serving the Kalamazoo community since 1947.
Check back with Great Lakes Gazette tomorrow for more about this special resource and gathering place.
