Feed This Giraffe

You can help serve the most important meal of the day (no, not that) on a Breakfast for the Animals excursion at Binder Park Zoo, Battle Creek (provided photo)

I couldn’t resist sharing this photo when it arrived at the Great Lakes Gazette headquarters with a plug for a couple of special events at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek:

– You can learn what some of the zoo residents eat and help feed them at a special Breakfast for the Animals, 10:30 a.m., Sunday, June 5.  Cost is $8 for zoo members, $16 for non-members.

– For a different look behind the scenes join the Savanna Management Tour at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11 and get a close-up look at African animals including antelope, zebras, and our friend the giraffe. Cost is $12 for zoo members, $20 for non-members.

Both programs are offered monthly through October; the fee includes zoo admission. Group tours may be arranged. Advance registration is required. See the details online.

I’m overdue for a return safari to this zoo. The kids were young when we visited, but I remember the Wild Africa area. At the Twiga Overlook at the Savanna you can buy feed and serve it to the giraffes, who gratefully reach for it with their 18-inch tongues.

This is why they invented hand wipes. Don’t leave home without them.

Binder Park Zoo is open daily til October 2, 2011.

  1. Cute creature appears to love the camera. I am intrigued by the zebra-style antlers – or could this be the zoo court jester entertaining us by sticking his tongue out & twirling it up in his nose? I love this animal – especially the dark eyes and beautiful patterned coat! Post & picture makes me want to meet him.
