Learn To Love The Outdoors With Rec 101

The great outdoors is your classroom for Rec 101 sessions at Michigan State Parks

If you made a New Year’s Resolution to learn a skill or be more adventurous in 2011 but haven’t gotten around to that part of the To Do list, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is here to help.

Recreation 101 is a new program at a number of State Parks and Recreation Areas that offers free introductory instruction and demonstration of outdoor activities and skills such as fishing, windsurfing, snorkeling and kayaking. There’s even a Kite-flying 101.

Rec 101 kicks off at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 4 at Holly Recreation Area in Southeast Michigan with a sampling of more than 15 of the activities that will be offered at different parks on various days throughout the summer.

Saturday’s demonstrations begin at 3 p.m. and include mountain biking, backpacking, and model airplane flying. At the end of the day everyone’s invited to observe Fire-building 101 and partake in S’mores Eating 101.

Get the picture?

No?

You’ll want to be there for Outdoor Photography 101.

Check out the DNR Get Outdoors Calendar for Rec 101 events throughout the summer. The program is scheduled to run year ’round.

The new Recreation Passport is required for park entry. The annual fee, which gets you into all Michigan State Parks, is just $10 per vehicle for residents and $29 annually or $8 per day for non-residents.

So stop procrastinating (I know that’s also on your list of New Year’s resolutions) and head to a Rec 101 program and you can finally learn to geocache. I understand it’s not as painful as it sounds.
