Summer Rolls Into St. Ignace

Car guys gathering for the annual weekend of wheel fun in St. Ignace

To the casual observer it looks like a bunch of guys standing around parking lots, talking and checking out each other’s classic rides. But what they’re really doing—despite the fog, drizzle and spring-like temperature—is greeting summer in St. Ignace.

This is the 36th annual car show and swap meet, and kick-starts the prime tourist season in this tourist town at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge.

The cruise begins in a few minutes, and the “Down Memory Lane Parade” is at 7 p.m. Friday.

The show itself is on Saturday, when thousands of vintage vehicles line up for your inspection along the streets of beautiful downtown St. Ignace.

We attended the event a couple of times when the kids were young and I still remember spending the better part of Saturday strolling the impressive linear parking lot of classic cars. It’s quite a sight. And the people watching is pretty darn good, too.

If you miss it this year, mark your calendar for the third weekend in June next year. The show is one of many produced by Nostalgic Productions. One of these years I want to see the Parade of Lights, as illuminated semi trucks cross the Mackinac Bridge (this year’s event is September 16-18).

Let the good times roll!
