Mati’s Deli-cious Brownie

Paige approves of the cream cheese filled brownie at Mati's Deli

If you love brownies and are heading to Henry Ford Museum or Greenfield Village—or are in the Dearborn area for any other reason—make a detour to Mati’s Deli for a memorable cream cheese and chocolate treat.

That’s what Paige and I did en route to the outdoor history museum. We’d visited Mati’s years ago for lunch, but the kids were so young that she didn’t remember the terrific sandwiches we enjoyed and most of all, the dessert.

Hmmm…..on second thought, maybe her love of brownies is deeply rooted in that early taste of Mati’s special version: two slices of cakey chocolate with a thick slab of not-too sweet, light cheesecake-like filling ($1.75). We shared one and gobbled it down before I thought to take a photo of it. Delish.

The deli is in a 1927 filling station

Mati’s Deli, now celebrating 25 years of good food, occupies a really cool, circa 1927, white-tiled filling station.

Our quick stop fueled my appetite for one of the thick Rueben sandwiches, but that will have to wait for another day.

The deli is tucked away on Monroe street, south of Oakwood Boulevard. Kind of hard to find but worth it.

  1. Used to have lunch there regularly as well, back when I was still a member of the working masses.
