Big Deals In Da U.P.

The Riptide Ride is a rockin' fun time on Munising Bay; a photo can't capture the speed and excitement

If you Groupon you know that you can get some great bargains by jumping on the offers that arrive in your email box every day.

Somehow I’ve gotten on the list to receive a similar promotion from

Shipwreck hunters gaze at the lost vessels through two large viewing wells in the bottom of the cruise boat

Today, for example, the Straight UP Deal was two tickets for the glass bottomed boat Shipwreck Tours on Lake Superior’s Munising Bay. It’s a $60 value that cost just $30.

Having recently taken the tour while researching the Munising area for Midwest Living and Michigan Travel Ideas magazine, I was curious about the offer.

But by the time I clicked on it to read more about the Straight UP Deal, the maximum of 50 available discounted pairs of tickets had been snapped up.

After taking the cruise I understand why; it was very cool to drift over and see the remains of three of the many wrecks that rest in the clear waters of the bay.

The shipwrecks are protected by the Alger Underwater Preserve and popular sites with scuba divers, but the boat tours make the experience available to the rest of us.

A similar thing happened recently with an offer for tickets for the Riptide Ride, a fun, new attraction in Munising.

Riptide Ride offered a Straight UP Deal; it's a fun "must" when visiting the Pictured Rocks

We took the 30-minute Rip Around the Bay and were thrilled with the spins and speed aboard the 28′ rigid hull inflatable boat. If the fog hadn’t rolled in we would have had an even wilder (but still safe) ride.

It was a real blast and nice complement to the 3-hour excursion aboard the Pictured Rocks Cruise.

You can sign up for Straight UP Deals at the Upper Michigan Source website. It’s free to sign up, and you never know what the next offer will be.

But be sure to act fast when you see a deal that you like and think you’ll use; the good ones go fast!
