Autumn and Michigan’s apple season are down the road a piece, but you don’t have to wait to hit the MI Apple Trail.
The Michigan Apple Committee and Detroit’s Eastern Market have launched an event to promote the state’s largest fruit crop and encourage you to visit at least 5 of the participating 20 farmers markets in Southeast Michigan.
First, you must print out a postcard “passport” that lists the markets, and have it stamped at 5 of those that you visit.
At each market on the MI Apple Trail you’ll find a 4-foot tall apple sculpture painted by Michigan artists. The fanciful apples will be displayed around the region until mid-September and then moved to Eastern Market, where they will be auctioned at the October 14 Apple Gala to raise cash for the markets.
Mail in your stamped passport by October 8, and vote online for the artsiest apple.
Seems like a lot of effort for a shot at winning one of 24 cash prizes of varying, yet-to-be announced amounts.
But hey, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
Besides, you’ve got to shop for food somewhere—might as well buy farm fresh good stuff and explore different markets while you’re at it.
