Sweet Traverse City Tradition: Bardon’s Wonder Freeze

It was the perfect way to wrap up a brief, end-of-summer visit to Traverse City: sharing a Monkey Tail at Bardon’s Wonder Freeze.

TJ, Tucker and I had just left Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, voted The Most Beautiful Place in America by viewers of Good Morning America, and had arrived back in Traverse City en route to the 313.

When I spied Bardon’s, a TC institution for over 60 years, I remembered the Monkey Tail: a frozen banana on a stick, dipped in chocolate and coated in nuts.

It had been years since we’d been to Bardon’s, but I just wanted a taste of that sweet treat.

We decided to share one before hitting the road and joined the steady stream of families, college students, young soccer players, and retirees who line up for cones, sundaes and other ice cream specialties at the colorful stand on busy East Front Street.

The Monkey Tail was $2 and as delish as we remembered. And what better way to meet your fruit quota for the day?
