Homemade: Agate Art

Another in a series about Christmas Gift ideas from the Great Lakes State.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined. – Thoreau

The Agate Lady lives by the words on this little handprinted sign in the window above her work table at the Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum in Grand Marais, Michigan.

I’ve written about Karen Brzys, The Agate Lady, a couple of times (see links below). I admit a special interest because we were high school classmates, though we didn’t really know each other then. I admire the path she’s taken, pursuing her passions and living a life that most folks would consider unconventional: becoming an expert on agates and owning a museum in a tiny town on the Lake Superior shore.

Karen also makes “mineral art” from agates and stones—suncatchers, nightlights, soap holders and other decorative and useful pieces. She has a new book about agates, a 2012 calendar and playing cards featuring images of Lake Superior agates.

Check out the online store and find something special for a rockhound or anyone who’d appreciate a beautiful gift crafted from the heart.

A sample of Karen's stained glass-like "mineral art."
