Hoosier Bat Tour Is A Hit

Detroit Tiger Prince Fielder won the 2012 Home Run Derby, pounding out 28 with a Hoosier Bat

Finally got to Comerica Park for a game the other evening—the first time I’ve been to the Detroit ballpark since the Tigers signed slugger Prince Fielder early this year.

It was a memorable evening for a few reasons:

  • There were almost 20 in our group celebrating the birthdays of my brother Gordie and his father-in-law Paul, and they treated us to really great seats
  • It was 100 degrees F at game time
  • The Los Angeles Angels topped the Tigers in the scorcher, 13-0

It was a fun outing despite the heat and the shutout. As my sister-in-law Mary Lou said, “It’s not all about the score.”

She’s right. I’m sure we’ll all remember the outcome of that game and the sweltering heat much longer than if it had been a ho-hum win on a balmy, perfect evening.

I had really hoped to see Prince Fielder hit a homer, though, partly because I remember him as a kid just a few years ahead of Graham’s class at The Giving Tree Montessori School and Our Lady Star of the Sea School.

Partly because I’d visited the Hoosier Bat Company in Valparaiso, Indiana, where Prince gets his birch baseball bats.

You can tour the manufacturing company for free; read about it in my story at
