Homemade: Popcorn Paradise

Popcorn Paradise flavors range from sweet watermelon to savory dill pickle, with a crunchy banana split in between

If life hands you lemons, you’re supposed to turn them into lemonade. But when Mike and Paula Sample were faced with having to make involuntary career changes, they made popcorn.

With no experience in food service or running their own business, two years ago the couple opted to open a popcorn shop and sell the snack in more than 30 sweet and savory flavors.

Popcorn Paradise is located in Grand Haven, a Lake Michigan Beachtown on the Mitten’s west coast. The cheery store is on the boardwalk at Chinook Pier, near where the schooner Wind Dancer is docked. After our cruise (see Grand Haven: A Grand Escape) we were able to sample the treats, made with Michigan popcorn.

Popcorn is my go-to snack and I thought I was being adventurous by sprinkling my home-popped batches with pepper, herbs and even a little sugar at times. But I stepped out of my popcorn comfort zone and tried a range of Popcorn Paradise flavors. I have to admit they were kind of fun and tasty.

If you can’t pop into the Grand Haven store you can buy Popcorn Paradise goodies online. Because you never know when you’ll have a craving for a crunchy banana split.
