Contest Corner: Be There At The Inaugural Great Lakes State Fair

In the dairy barn at the late Michigan State Fair

In 2009 then-Governor Jennifer Granholm axed the Michigan State Fair, a tradition in this agriculturally-rich state since 1849.

It was one of the oldest state fairs in the nation and because it was held at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Eight Mile Road in Detroit, brought rural and urban residents together.

Not only was attending the fair an annual tradition in our family, the kids (and sometimes TJ and I) entered crafts and projects in the community arts exhibition. We’ve got a heap of ribbons for the effort.

Although the Michigan State Fair is history, the Upper Peninsula State Fair continues in Escanaba. Governed by an independent U.P. State Fair Authority., this year’s event started on August 13 and runs through the 19th.

To fill the fair void in the Detroit area a new non-profit organization is producing the inaugural Great Lakes State Fair August 31-September 3 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

I’m excited about the possibilities for this independent effort. Traditional fair activities are on the schedule, like agriculture and livestock exhibits, pie eating and watermelon seed spitting contests and midway rides and games. The Great Lakes State Fair even revived the home arts and crafts exhibition and competition for kids and adults. Wish I’d known that earlier; we could have carried on our tradition and maybe earned some more ribbons!

Plus, there will be daily performances of the Shrine Circus and locally produced foods and beers will be featured at the Michigan Pavilion and a Beer Garden. Are elephant ears a Michigan product?

There are two ticket options for entry: an “ultimate” pass that includes entertainment, exhibits, the circus and unlimited midway rides, and one that excludes the circus and rides. Enjoy a discount by buying tickets online in advance; to check out the details click: Great Lakes State Fair

You can enter to win a VIP Family Fair Getaway that includes eight ultimate tickets to the fair and an overnight stay at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn.

Second and third place prizes of four passes each, and weekly drawings for two tickets will be awarded. Check out the  Great Lakes State Fair site for the official rules, and enter by August 24.

You can’t win if you don’t enter!
