It’s Squashtoberfest time in Frankenmuth, Michigan’s “Little Bavaria.”
The annual Squashtoberfest recipe contest rewards creative use of pumpkin and squash of all kinds, from butternut and buttercup to patty pan and zucchini. It’s hosted by Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, the family-owned string of businesses that includes the rambling restaurant famous for its chicken dinners. The contest is co-sponsored by Pioneer Sugar, a Michigan company.
Enter your best in the categories of Savory Main Dishes, the Great Soup Challenge or Sweet Surprises—or all three. Each dish must feature pumpkin or squash and include Pioneer Sugar.
A panel of judges will select 10 finalists in each category to travel to Frankenmuth on Tuesday, October 23, where they will prepare their recipes for final selection of the winners.
First place winners in each category will receive $200 and 40 pounds of Michigan’s own Pioneer Sugar, plus four tickets to Zehnder’s Christmas Dinner.
Second prizes are $100, 20 pounds of Pioneer Sugar and dinner for four at Zehnder’s.
Third place winners each receive a $50 Zehnder’s gift card, 10 pounds of Pioneer Sugar and dinner for two at Zehnder’s.
Hurry! Entries must be snail mailed and postmarked no later than Friday, September 21.
