Plan A Wonder-Fall Michigan Getaway

St. Anne Church and Haan’s 1830 Inn, Mackinac Island

If you plan it right, and Mother Nature cooperates, there’s no more scenic time for a road trip in the Great Lakes State than during the fall color season.

Visitors bound for Mission Point Resort mug for the camera—everyone on Mackinac Island seemed to be in a jovial mood on a beautiful fall day

I just did a day trip to Mackinac Island, and it was a perfect Pure Michigan excursion…confirmed by a couple from Canada who, as we waited for our Shepler’s Ferry ride, chatted up their love of the island, their admiration for Tim Allen (the voice of the Pure Michigan radio and television advertising campaign) and  travel to Michigan in general.

They especially appreciated the 6% sales tax vs. the 13% they pay in Ontario.

Mackinac Island is so very friendly in fall. There are fewer folks, and it seemed everyone went out of their way to smile and say hello.

Plus, at this time of year you can get a really good deal if you’re in the market for a Mackinac Island hoodie.

My point: Just hit the road for a fall color tour.

Check out my story just published online at Chicago Sun-Times Media and my previous post about how to enjoy autumn in Michigan, Fall For The Great Lakes State.

Then pack a bag—and your camera—and hit the road to catch the color while you can.

If you’re in Southeast Michigan October 6-7 head to one of my favorite seasonal events, the Fall Flavor Weekend at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, and soak up the harvest time decor and American fare prepared at the historic homes throughout the village.
