Tour-iffic Haunted Excursions

October is the perfect time to take a guided tour of haunted locales around Michigan

In the mood for some scary fun? Take a walk (or in Detroit, a bike ride) on the spooky side with one of these guided, ghost-friendly excursions:

Haunts of Mackinac
Mackinac Island
Choose the Downtown Haunted History, Haunts at Mission Point Resort or The Dead of Night tour.
Tours range from 60 minutes to 2-1/2 hours offered on select dates through October 27; some dates are sold out. Plan to stay overnight on the island because the ferries from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace are on their fall schedules and there are no boats after the tours.

Twilight Walking Tours
Sault Ste. Marie
Learn about the legends and history of the oldest city in Michigan on a Lantern Light Ghost Walk at 9 p.m. or Thistle and Time History Tour at 7 p.m. Tours begin at the Soo Locks Visitor Center. No charge; suggested donation is $10 per person or $20 for families.

Haunted Petoskey
The 90-minute tour takes in locations around the Victorian resort city where the seemingly unexplainable happens. One of four tours offered year ’round by Petoskey Yesterday, including  tours related to Ernest Hemingway’s time spent in this corner of Michigan. The tour is $15 per person; check the website, call or email for tour times and dates.

Ghost Hunters Weekend at the Terrace Inn
Petoskey
Spend October 26-28 at the historic Terrace Inn in the company of ghost hunters and the authors of the Haunted Travels of Michigan. Kat Tedsen and Bev Rydel offer other tours, including a sold out visit to the old prison in Jackson (get on the list for information on the 2013 schedule). The two-night stay with ghost stories and ghost hunt is $289 (double occupancy).

Ghosts of Kalamazoo Historic Tour
Learn some history, weird facts and happenings on the tours of Downtown Kalamazoo, Mountain Home Cemetery and Celery Flats/Stuart Manor. The 45- to 50-minute tours are offered on different dates and starting times vary, weekends from October 12 through the 27th. Cost is $8 per person (must be 12 or older) and proceeds help Warm Kids. Bring a new pair of gloves or hat for a child and get a $1 discount. Reserve in advance online.

Downtown Howell Tour
Walk through the historic town and learn about haunted sites with guides from the Southern Michigan Paranormals and special guest hosts, The Ghostbusters of Michigan. Remaining tours are October 13, 20 and 27, or arrange a private tour for a group of 10 or more. Prices are $15 adult; $10 senior; $5 12 and under, and advance reservations are required.

Haunted Detroit
Spooky spokes! Bicycle your way to Detroit landmarks with Wheelhouse Detroit. There’s still room on the 5:30-7:30 p.m. October 30 and 31 tours; cost is $25 if you bring your own wheels, $35 with bike rental. Or contact the company to arrange a private, group tour.

Haunted Tours at Historic Fort Wayne
Detroit
The 2012 events are sold out, and for good reason. Who wouldn’t enjoy a chance to have a guided tour of the 1840s fort, with time afterward to roam the buildings and grounds on the Detroit River? In 2012 tours were offered monthly from April, May, June, July,  August and November, and twice in September and October at $50 per person (must be 18 and older). Go to the website to get on the list to receive advance notice of the 2013 tour schedule.
