Get A Head Start On Halloween Happenings

Cruise Michigan’s backroads for spooky scenes like this, not far from Hell

No need to wait until October 31 to scare up some spooky, seasonal fun. This weekend you can go trick or treating at Zoo Boos in Battle Creek, Detroit and Lansing, climb aboard a choice of vintage trains for a festive fall ride, and find corn mazes and haunted houses galore.

Check out the calendars at Pure Michigan and DNR Go-Get Outdoors for more on these and other events like this sampling of Halloween happenings (click each event for fees and more info):

  • Expect spooky surprises as the Haunted Hayride winds through the Marquette County Fairgrounds (for ages 5 and up), Friday-Saturday, October 19-20
  • Doctor Scream’s Spook Show fills the stage with magic and comedy at the Frankenmuth Historical Museum & Fischer Hall in Michigan’s Little Bavaria Friday-Saturday, October 19 and 20
  • Walk with the animals and talk with the animals at Mother Nature’s Halloween Saturday, October 20 at the Bay City Recreation Area. “Animal actors” will talk about wildlife and there will be a pumpkin-lit walking trail, crafts and refreshments.
  • At Ghost Stories and Tea you’ll tour the haunted house and meet paranormal society experts as you sip tea and nibble treats at the Sweet Dreams Inn Victorian Bed & Breakfast in Bay Port, 2-6 p.m., Sunday, October 21.
  • And what better time of year to go to Hell? The tiny southeast Michigan town is home of the year ’round Screams Halloween store and creepy ice cream dishes at Screams Creamatory at Hell in a Handbasket cafe.
