Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, was preempted this year by retailers who insisted on opening their doors a day early, on Thanksgiving. Folks fled their turkey dinners and dirty dishes and flocked to stores to scoop up deals on goods that they just couldn’t wait another 12 hours to buy.
As an alternative to mass-produced merchandise and the mall mentality I am reviving the “buy local” email message that I received last year about thinking outside of the big box shops.

Watch this space for homegrown gift ideas that are produced or experienced locally, such as tickets to a live performance of Jeff Daniels: Onstage & Unplugged at the actor/singer/playwright’s Purple Rose Theatre in beautiful downtown Chelsea.
Daniels opened the intimate, 168-seat theater in his hometown, about 20 minutes west of Ann Arbor, in 1991. Original plays showcase talent from the Midwest, and the founder and executive director makes occasional appearances.
He named the non-profit theater for the 1985 Woody Allen film The Purple Rose of Cairo, in which he starred. Fortunately his movie Dumb & Dumber didn’t come out until 1994, well after the theater’s identity had been established.
