Breatharians Need Not Apply

As you may know from previous posts I occasionally enter contests and encourage others to get in on the fun. Here’s one that should be of interest to just about everyone who lives in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa or Missouri. Everyone except Breatharians, the folks who live on nothing but air.

“Win Free Groceries for a Year!” at Farmers Feed US, an effort to build awareness for local farms and foods and (although they don’t come right out and say it because farmers are shy that way) appreciation for the folks who feed us.

In Michigan there are 3 prizes of $5,000 each for the contest that began November 15, 2009 and ends February 12, 2010. The 5 participating states have different contest dates; Ohio’s has already closed. There’s nothing to buy and you can enter every day, once per farmer (you have to check out the site to understand).

Short videos featuring real live farmers give you a couple of minutes worth of insight into the 3rd and 5th generation farms and the families behind them.

Plus, you’ll pick up fascinating fun facts at the site. Who knew chocolate milk is better than sports drinks for replenishing muscles and aiding recovery after exercise? Or that more than 2 million hogs are raised in Michigan each year…that the state is first in the U.S. in production of cucumbers for pickling and potatoes for chipping…and soybean plants cover about 2 million acres of Michigan soil?

I also learned that you can lead a cow up but not downstairs because a cow’s knees do not bend to allow the downward maneuver.

Which helps explain why cows prefer ranches to Colonials, or even split levels.

  1. Very cool, fun facts, Kath….I’m always looking for those! Speaking of farmers, did you know that on a corncob – there is one kernel for each piece of silk in the tassle? Who thinks of these things?

  2. Thank you, Cindy Lou—I did not know that about the corn kernels and silk. Whose job is it to count and make sure they come out even? And what if they don’t? 🙂

  3. Have you ever met a Breatharian? I want to meet one. If you come across one, please give them my email. LOL! 🙂

    • I’ve yet to meet a Breatharian, or anyone who claims to be one. Will keep you posted!
